Companies House identity verification
Companies House identity verification: what UK companies need to know
Identity verification has been a legal requirement since 18 November 2025 and is being phased in for directors and people with significant control (PSCs).
- New directors verify as part of incorporation or appointment
- Existing directors provide personal codes through the confirmation statement process
- PSCs have role-specific 14-day windows for providing verification details
- Verification is available through GOV.UK One Login or an Authorised Corporate Service Provider
What changed from 18 November 2025
Companies House began mandatory identity verification for directors and PSCs, with a transition period for existing roles rather than one single deadline for everyone.
Directors and confirmation statements
Existing directors use their Companies House personal code in the company’s confirmation statement process. Companies House says a company cannot file its confirmation statement unless all directors who need to be verified have completed the requirement.
PSCs have separate verification steps
People with significant control may need to provide their personal code separately from any director role. The applicable 14-day period depends on when they became a PSC and whether they are also a director.
How identity can be verified
Individuals can verify directly through GOV.UK One Login or through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider such as a registered accountant or solicitor.
